MARCH 1968
1/4
THE MOTHERS OF INVENTION - album - WE’RE ONLY IN IT FOR THE MONEY - March 4
Well now, here is a record that has a big influence on me, for good or bad . Outwardly, it is a parody o the Beatles “Sgt. Peppers”, but musically Zappa upped the ante way beyond anything in pop music before, with his use of collage, Varese influenced electronic tape music, sped up voices etc. etc. The lyrics skewer the hippie flower power world, as well as warn them of the dangers of “the man”.
At times really funny, really weird and fun tho listen to, if you are up to it . Many think is the best thing that Frank Zappa ever did .
I could go on, and on , song , by song But I will just send you to go to the wiki . for it .

THE BEATLES - LADY MADONA - March 15 (UK) 18(US)
Recorded before their trip to India, this Paul McCartney,’s ,Fats Domino feeling song, was much simpler than the heady music they had been doing for a couple of years . A deliberate back to basics move on their part . Some view its as a slight song for the Beatles, others as a clever look a the plight of working class mothers . It was #1 in the UK, and #4 in the US . The flip was going to be Lennon’s early version of “Across the Universe”, but Lennon was no yet happy with it, so for the first time George Harrison got one of his songs on a Beatles single . “The Inner Light .” This is the last of theBeatles Indian sounding songs, and all the instruments were played by Indian musicians, in India, while George was working on his soundtrack for the “Wonderwall” film . The lyrics take inspiration from the Tao the Ching . The more you know , the less you know”, put simply . Deeply felt, one of Harrison’s beter things . And good contrast the the more raucous A side .

THE WHO - CALL ME LIGHTING/ DR JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE
Best I can tell, is that these songs were issued in the US first . In the UK ,“Call Me Lighting” was the flip of “Dogs” in June, and “Dr. Jekyll” the Flip of “Magic Bus” in October .
Not the strongest of songs, it did reach #40 .

The flip is a bit more interesting .

I've never heard that Who song before and never would have known it was them. One of the commenters had the same opinion:

"For years I thought this was the Monkees."
